Pharmaceutical APIs

Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) are the main ingredients in drugs that cause the desired medical effects. They are also known as drug substances or pharmacologic substances. APIs are present in all types of drug products, including tablets, capsules, creams, and injectables.

APIs are made through a long manufacturing process that involves chemical compounds called raw materials and intermediates. The generic name of a drug is usually its API, and is often derived from the chemical name. For example, the chemical name for aspirin is acetylsalicylic acid.

APIs are a crucial part of the pharmaceutical industry, contributing to around 35% of the market.
